Moving from Sinful to Healthy and Unstoppable "Chocolate
is the new coffee," says Beth Kimmerle, author
of Chocolate: The
Sweet History. U.S. sales of gourmet Chocolate has far out paced the growth
rate of specialty coffee. Antioxidants in chocolate may help protect against
cancer, dark chocolate has been found to moderate blood pressure, and other
ingredients elevate mood. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University
found that Chocolate
thins blood and protects the heart in the same way as aspirin. Flavanol, is the key compound in chocolate which slows down platelet
clumping that can block off blood vessels and lead to a heart attack or stroke.
How about the chocoholic
(not a scientific term) as defined in The International Journal of Eating
Disorders as a person who has no control over the chocolate he or she
consumes. As with other addictions, the chocoholic often does not even know
there is a problem. If it is obvious that something is wrong, the chocoholic
will blame it on societal elements
instead of chocolate. Non-addicts have a sense of control over their cravings
and choose to eat chocolate for conscious reasons. To a non-addict, eating
chocolate may be associated with stress relief, mood boosting, pain relieving,
or even just quality snacking. "It makes me feel happy," says Palo
Alto High School senior Holly Wang.
Casanova the famous lover, is said to have consumed chocolate
(Even gave up champagne for Chocolate) for it's
aphrodisiac qualities before frolicking with his conquests. Recent research
suggests that women are more susceptible (Gentlemen—Good or Bad??) to
the effects of Phenylethylamine and Serotonin than
men. As the tasting’s are free and you can buy
